Step Four: The Math Factor

Most technology courses require an understanding of applied math. Many women and girls are fearful of math and have had negative experiences in the math classroom. This phenomenon is so common that courses and curriculum on math anxiety for women are in place around the country. The key to success in teaching most females math is -- like technology -- contextual and group learning. Fortunately many off-the-shelf curriculums exist for teaching math contextually, see IWITTS's bibliography linked above. Many technology courses at the two-year college level have math prerequisites that are unrelated to the technology coursework and omit the applied math that will be needed. Technology courses should only require math that is relevant to their courses and/or develop contextual math modules to add to their curriculum.

Step Five: Connect the Women in Your Classes with Other Women

A female mentor or peer support network can help your students stay the course when they are feeling discouraged and can provide helpful tips for succeeding in a predominantly male environment. There are many on-line and real-time associations for women in technology, connect your female students to them. See the Career Links on WomenTechWorld.org for a list of some of these networks. Also, WomenTechTalk on WomenTechWorld.org -- a free listserv for women in technology and students -- provides a combination of support and expert career panels to it's over 200 members from across the U.S.

Donna Milgram is founder and Executive Director of the National Institute for Women in Trades, Technology & Science (IWITTS). She is currently the Principal Investigator of the CalWomenTech Project, a $2 million National Science Foundation grant awarded in April 2006. She was also the Principal Investigator of the WomenTech Project, funded by the National Science Foundation, which had a goal of increasing the number of women enrolled and retained in technology education in three national community college demonstration sites. She led IWITTS's partnership with the Cisco Learning Institute (CLI)/Cisco Gender Initiative. Ms. Milgram produced the interactive teacher training video "School-to-Work: Preparing Young Women for High Skill, High Wage Careers." Ms. Milgram's recent conference presentations include: the NSF ATE Conference "Recruiting Women to Science, Technology, Engineering & Math" (2004) and California Educating for Careers Conference in 2003.




Science Teachers Use New Technology to Make Science Fun



A special hands on Science and Technology workshop is coming to San Antonio, Texas. This workshop is for science teachers and designed for them to learn more about the new technologies that have came out that make science more hands on. Currently, Science programs have labs once and a while, but mostly consist of bookwork. By introducing science teachers to these new technologies, they are able to create more fun and interactive science lessons.

Science is supposed to be a hands on subject. The fact that schools are creating lesson plans ore around bookwork doesn't help students fully understand the capabilities that science careers have to offer. When the teachers go to this Science and Technology workshop, this will give them more information to pass onto their students about the exciting things science careers have to offer. When teachers offer more labs and more hands on science training, it helps the students to learn better. Anything hands on is always better than bookwork. Of course, bookwork combined with labs is best. By adding technology to the labs, students are able to track data more efficiently and analyze it better.

When the teachers integrate the technology into the labs, students are amazing at how much more they can learn and track by having access to the science technology. The technology is said to enhance learning in chemistry, biology, physics, math, middle school science, physical science and earth science. It is so important for teachers to attend outside of school triaging and this Science and Technology Workshop is a great way to start.

Effective teachers are teachers that are constantly going out of their way to go above and beyond for their students. They are constantly attending trainings and seeking outside education to enhance their careers and give them tools to better their students and help learning be easier for them. No teacher likes to fail a student. They want their students to pay attention to what they are teaching, learn from them and score well on tests. Happy students in class create a healthy and thriving learning environment. Schools now a day lack the presence of effective teachers and it is so important for schools to hire great teachers. The union currently protects all the teachers who once were effective but have gotten lazy and are not anymore. How is this fair for the students?

A teacher that seeks outside education to better him or herself so they can be a better educator is great. Sadly it's rare for the United States schools to have a majority of effective teachers. By creating free workshops such as these, it give the teachers access to great tools that can better their teaching and create thriving learning environments for their students. Technology has come a long way and even since the teachers have graduated from college technology is ever changing! Its so important for these workshops to be readily available and also for schools to create workshops showing off the new technologies that have been invented to better their schools rating and their students test scores.




The Different Innovations We See in Science and Technology



The different innovations we see in science and technology nowadays come from different bright minds working together to address mankind's needs.

As the fearless quest against hunger and diseases continues, the complexity of human relationships goes on opposite ways, into something paradoxical. A lot has been said and done on how people become friends and soon go on separate ways.

There are norms that are already set in our society a long time ago. But there are also standards set in one's self. Men prefer to marry younger women. But with some beliefs in the community, marriage of two people with significant age gap is considered a "cradle snatchers" act for the older partner.

Arranged marriage is sometimes easier to handle for more innocent women compared to those who are already more experienced in life. The society has already a standard as to when the marrying age is still up especially for the females. But this doesn't mean that when they reach or have even outgrown that preferred time, walking down the aisle is already an elusive dream.

Age should not be taken as a serious factor in the issues of marriage, just like how it is also being taken on the corporate world. Having a younger wife doesn't always mean a better companion in life.

Setting people into marriage is no longer as simple and private as before. This tradition becomes so commercialized these days. It's like a trading game. As long as there's a willing buyer and seller, a deal can be sealed anytime.

Just like a real trade, the deal is accompanied by a contract between two individuals with a possible involvement of a third party broker. A girl traded for marriage is being presented with attractive opportunities like local and out of the country travels.

When all the parties agree, the contents of the contract take place. An instant marriage is set. But the situation is much better if the two complete strangers become good friends and eventually, lovers.
